Thoughts on Philippine Football

I was finally back online and while I was browsing the net to catch up, I accidentally stumbled upon the website of 2010 FIFA World Cup which was held a few months ago in South Africa. I am not really into sports and I must admit that I do not any idea how football works, but out of curiosity, I decided to browse the site just to see the highlights of the said event. When I looked through the teams that participated at the FIFA World Cup, I was sad to see the Philippines was not included in the list. Perhaps this was due to the fact that the sport was not really that popular here in our country.

Actually, my readings further revealed that our football team never had any significant success on the international stage and has never qualified for the FIFA World Cup. I wonder what could be the problem…Could this be due to the lack of funds for proper training? It seems that funds are always insufficient for the proper training of Filipino athletes and we often hear about this concern being aired on the news. I also wonder, what happens to the slice of the budget that goes to the Philippine Sports Commission? We often hear the government say that they are proud of the Filipino champions like Manny Paquiao, but what does the government do to support the training of our other athletes?

Train our athletes well and sponsors will surely be knocking at their door. Some big company might even sponsor the football kits of the Philippine national football team. The way I see it, the Philippine team never had the opportunity to shine at the international scene of football because not much attention and support is being given to them.
